The Brief

The client was a US private equity firm that focuses on direct real estate investment.  With the lack of supply and fairly stagnant market, private equity firms have had to look further up the risk curve to enable them to get the rates of return that their investors demand. Therefore they acquired a development site in London and were assessing other developments across Europe. However they did not have extensive development expertise in-house.

Our Process

We used our breadth of knowledge to assess individuals who had the technical development experience, whilst having the necessary commercial acumen to be able to fit within a private equity firm. We searched within property companies and development arms of funds across Europe. We used a variety of tools to assess not only experience, but also personality and intelligence to ensure the best fit with the organisation.

The Results

We recruited an individual that had worked for a developer, pan-euro fund manager and a contractor, who had the ideal mix of hands-on bricks and mortar development experience in combination with the numerical acumen to be successful in the role.

This business is a leading multi-disciplinary construction consultancy, who had developed this new service line to cater for businesses looking for alternative sources of capital due to the funding gap left by banks. 

Our Process

The challenges we faced were to ensure that our research covered the full breadth of potential target markets, and to attract a leading player to a business that is not known for providing corporate finance advisory services. 

In-depth sector knowledge and rigorous search methodology helped us identify a strong short list of experienced candidates, each with debt capital markets knowledge and the necessary client contacts within regulated industries. 

The Results

Our client found it hard to choose from a strong shortlist but decided to offer to a candidate who was working within a real estate team of a leading corporate bank. The successful candidate brought a network of relevant client contacts and the business is growing fees as a result.

Our client is a wholly-owned subsidiary of a leading US private equity firm, which focuses on assessing loan portfolio acquisitions and carrying out the asset management initiatives on the acquired portfolios.

We assessed the market for the highest performing teams. Took time with our client to form a strategy for identifying other industries where people with the relevant skills may be found, such as investment banks, property companies and advisory firms.  

Our shortlist was strong with individuals who had the required real estate knowledge and the intelligence to add value and leadership to the team.

The Results

The successful candidate has been a great fit with the team and the business goes from strength to strength, and in a market-leading position in terms of AUM and number of transactions.
