The Chief Executive of the UK Studio of a leading global architectural practice commissioned us to find a Head of Business Development. The business was finding it hard to establish a distinct identity and demonstrate its understanding of the UK market, rather than being seen as a small offshoot of a major corporation.
An executive search within architectural and related businesses produced some good potential candidates, but many were wary of committing to a business which wasn’t yet firmly established in the UK. Through our network and using information from previous similar searches, we were able to tap into people who were not working in the usual places but who nevertheless had the right skills.
The successful candidate was no longer working in the property sector, but he had relevant knowledge and a good network of contacts from previous employment. Because he had had dealings with us in the past, he took our approach seriously and we were able to convince him of the potential of this role. He proved to be an excellent fit with the company and has had great success in strengthening the practice’s position in the UK.
Company Secretary, Multi-disciplinary Consultant
Our client, one of the leading consultancy partnerships, wanted to appoint a Company Secretary to bring a proper focus to the role, rather than dividing the duties between the finance and operations teams. They recognised the need for someone who could manage not only the legal and technical aspects of the role, but who had the strength of personality and gravitas to make an impact at board level.
We took a wide-ranging approach to the search as suitable candidates could be found not only in property-related companies but in a number of different professional environments. These included agreed target companies in the legal, financial and technical worlds, as well as using our network for known individuals of the right calibre.
Having interviewed a variety of promising candidates we presented our client with a shortlist of four, all with different backgrounds. The role was accepted by the preferred candidate, the in-house lawyer in a major professional organisation who had previously worked in the real estate industry and had been recommended by a professional colleague.
COO, UK Capital Markets, Global Surveying Practice
With the departure of their Divisional COO, our client needed a really strong successor to manage this critical role in their most valuable service line which was critical to the profitability of their UK business. As well as the technical requirements for the role, the person would need strong commercial acumen and the ability to build strong relationships.
We carried out a broad search, covering competitor surveyors, other professional services firms and financial institutions working in capital markets. As well as using formal research techniques, our network uncovered a number of people working in businesses that were not obvious targets.
We produced a strong shortlist of candidates with a variety of experience, and the position was accepted by the COO of a hospital, who had previously held senior management roles in the construction industry. He made an immediate and positive impact on the business and proved his value quickly.
